I was cycling through the languages (which say "system locale" and should say "language"). I cycled through them once. Then again. Before it had gone through a second time it started giving me gibberish, with angle brackets around it. i.e. (this is made up):

All over the place.

I tried taking a screenshot, but ended up with a black screen.

Great, so that setting has now been remembered, meaning my text is now complete gibberish. An example of part of the first line at the menu screen:
<C2F1><AE00>

This also brings up a "feature request" - don't automatically save changes! Have a button that says "save/apply".

I deleted my settings folder to get it back to English. I see now that the option is "language" not "system locale", that's just the language; as I couldn't see it at the time of typing, I was guessing. :-)

After trying it again, this happens after "Italiano" (italian I guess).

The option in my config at this point (broken):

Delete your config file to fix those kind of issues.

It only saves your config file when you exit the game.

As for that text you see with <C2F1> you are talking about, that just means you are missing the correct font to display that.

That isn't a bug, just a missing font, and no, we can't detect that.

I appreciate this can't be fixed in this manner given what you've stated, however there must be better solutions than (go and find the config and edit it).
Possibilities include:

  • Don't save changes unless the user actually tells the game to. (preferred)
  • Allow right-mouse clicking to go back.
  • Have character sets that require non-default fonts require extra explicit confirmation (although this does assume everyone has a ANSI-ish character set installed).
