Warzone 2100 Liberation

Stage 1

On the 6th December 2004, the source code of Warzone 2100 has been released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) by Eidos-Interactive, after a petition of the Warzone 2100 fan community. The released package contained the games source code and the main game data, while the original music and full motion videos (FMVs) where missing. But regarding to the included readme.txt of that package, it was unclear if the game data was covered under the terms of the GPL as well.

Petition

Free Warzone 2100

To: Eidos Interactive

Gamer's of the world unite.

We need your help! You are an important element in the gaming community,
and we need you to support the open-sourcing of Warzone 2100.

Let me provide a little background history of Warzone 2100.

Released in April 1999 Warzone 2100 was the first 3D Real-Time-Strategy game.
It stood-out back then and almost 5 years later it remains unrivaled in its
particular innovations. Pumpkin Studios created it and Eidos Interactive
distributed it. Warzone 2100 was advertised very little, and after 7 months and
10 patches Pumpkin Studios was disbanded and shortly thereafter Eidos ended all
support for the game.

This is where you can help.

In October of 1999 NEWST was formed to continue enhancing and supporting the
game. In February of 2003 NEWST became Pumpkin-2. Over the years, members of the
group have created mods, maps, editors, utilities, Artificial Intelligences and
even an anti-cheating game server. Warzone 2100 is a game that commanded our
continued support. We simply could not let it die with the demise of its
creators.

But we have reached an impasse and this is where your vote can help make a
difference.

In order to continue Warzone 2100’s evolution we need the source code.
This petition's mission is to draw Eidos Interactive's attention to the
persistent interest in the game. They are the legal owners of the copyright
and have (to-date) shown no intent to do anything with the source code.

The original creators of the game (Pumpkin Studios) gave us their blessing from
the very beginning of our efforts and have recently reaffirmed that they would
love to see Warzone 2100 open-sourced. The only hitch is that Eidos has to
approve it and we believe that their attention is focused on other matters.

Help us bring Eidos Interactive's attention to the long forgotten buried
treasure they have in their vaults and cast your vote to open-source Warzone
2100.

With the open-sourcing of Warzone many fresh and addicting strategy gaming
experiences will become possible, including (but far from being limited to):
 • A brand new campaign
 • Truly advanced A.I.
 • The creation of the next-generation in RTS game-play design.

Warzone 2100 Source & Data

1) These source and data files are provided as is with no guarantees.

2) No assistance or support will be offered or given.

3) Everything you will require to make a build of the game should be here.
If it isn't, you'll have to improvise(*).

4) None of us here at Pivotal Games are in a position to be able to offer any
    help with making this work.

5) This source code is released under the terms of the GNU Public License.
Please be sure to read the entirety of this license but the summary is that
you're free to do what you want with the source subject to making the full
source code freely available in the event of the distribution of new
    binaries.

Finally, the primary motivation for this release is for entertainment and
educational purposes. On the subject of the latter, don't be surprised to see
some pretty gnarly old-school C code in here; the game was a classic but large
areas of the code aren't pretty; OO design and C++ evangelists beware! We
haven't spent any time cleaning the code or making if pretty - what you see is
what you're getting, warts n' all.

Thankyou to Jonathan Kemp of Eidos Europe for permitting the release. Thanks
also to Frank Lamboy for assistance with the release and for campaigning along
with many many others over the years for the source to be made available. The
correspondence, online petitions and persistence made this possible. We were
constantly amazed at the community support for Warzone even after all this
time; it's nice to be able to give something back, assuming you can get it to
 compile...;-)

(*) Except FMV and music...

Stage 2

On 5th June 2008, jaywalker_eidos - an employee of Eidos-Interactive and a fan of Warzone 2100 :) - joined our forums and offered his help to clarify the licensing issue about the data, and if it would be possible to release the missing music and FMVs as well. As the result of his - and some people of the Warzone 2100 community - work, the licensing issue about the main data has been clarified and the FMVs + music has also been released under the terms of the GNU GPL. On 11th June 2008, 16:53 CET, an updated readme for the Warzone 2100 liberation has been released.

New readme

Warzone 2100 Source & Data
--------------------------

This document replaces the file "readme.txt" as present in the Warzone 2100 GPL
 release of December 6th 2004.

1) These source and data files are provided as is with no guarantees:
   - No assistance or support will be offered or given.
   - Everything you will require to make a build of the game should be here. If
it isn't, you'll have to improvise.
   - None of us here at Pivotal Games are in a position to be able to offer any
      help with making this work.

2) Everything included (source code and data), as well as the not included
videos and music, is released under the terms of the GNU General Public
License, version 2 or (at your option) any later version.
Please be sure to read the entirety of this license, but the summary is that
you're free to do what you want with the source subject to making the full
source code freely available in the event of the distribution of new
    binaries.

3) Following exception to the GPL is granted:
   ------
Linking Warzone 2100 statically or dynamically with other modules is making
a combined work based on Warzone 2100. Thus, the terms and conditions of
the GNU General Public License cover the whole combination.

In addition, as a special exception, the copyright holders of Warzone 2100
give you permission to combine Warzone 2100 with code included in the
standard release of libraries that are accessible, redistributable and
linkable free of charge. You may copy and distribute such a system
following the terms of the GNU GPL for Warzone 2100 and the licenses of the
     other code concerned.

Note that people who make modified versions of Warzone 2100 are not
obligated to grant this special exception for their modified versions; it
is their choice whether to do so. The GNU General Public License gives
permission to release a modified version without this exception; this
exception also makes it possible to release a modified version which
     carries forward this exception.
   ------

4) Permission is granted to use the name "Warzone 2100", the logos, stories,
    texts and related materials.

5) Permission is granted to copy and distribute unaltered copies and/or images
of the original game discs in any medium, provided that they are distributed
free of charge and retain their original copyright and trademark notices.

Finally, the primary motivation for this release is for entertainment and
educational purposes. On the subject of the latter, don't be surprised to see
some pretty gnarly old-school C code in here; the game was a classic, but large
areas of the code aren't pretty; OO design and C++ evangelists beware! We
haven't spent any time cleaning the code or making it pretty - what you see is
what you're getting, warts n' all.

Thank you to Jonathan Kemp of Eidos Europe for permitting the release. Thanks to
Martin Severn for allowing to use his soundtrack. Thanks to Jason Walker for
helping to facilitate the release of the movies and sound tracks, as well as
clarifying the meaning of this license. Thanks also to Frank Lamboy for
assistance with the release and for campaigning along with many many others
over the years for the source to be made available.
The correspondence, online petitions and persistence made this possible. We were
constantly amazed at the community support for Warzone even after all this
time; it's nice to be able to give something back, assuming you can get it to
 compile... ;-)
